On the 7th of July, a millet mela was organised at the Empress Girls PU College in Tumkur to create awareness on the various aspects of minor millets, to create interest among farmers and to provide information on their cultivation, processing and marketing. Several dignitaries from Tumkur and Bangalore were invited to participate. Mrs. H.S. Mamatha & Mr. Sujith, the programme coordinator from KVK, Tiptur invited DREAM:IN to participate in the millet mela to share the work that had been done for DREAM:IN Tumkur and also to showcase the products under the brand ‘Tumahara’ that will be launched very soon.
The mela was inaugurated by Mr. Govinda Raju, CEO, Zilla Panchayat, Tumkur & Dr. N. Nagaraja, Director of Extension, GKVK. Around 200 people visited the mela throughout the day. Dr. H B Shivaleela & Dr. Khadar, experts on agriculture gave talks at the mela about the importance and advantages of the millets. Mr. Srikanta, sub-editor, Deccan Herald & an agriculture specialist, also addressed several of the farmers problems. He mentioned that DREAM:IN has found several solutions for the same, and requested the agriculture universities & research labs in Tumkur to follow the DREAM:IN approach
The DREAM:IN Tumkur Team exhibited Tumahara (Tumkur Farmers Products) along with the first agripreneur group (Mr. Kumara Swamy & Team from Somalapur, Gubbi tq. Tumkur). They had a stall at the mela and spoke to many people about the project and the idea behind Tumahara. There was a lot of excitement from the farmers group as well as the visiting audience. Everyone liked concept of Agriprenuership, and the Tumahara branding & packaging. Many connections were made with several like minded people, from farmers to the media. The DREAM:IN Tumkur project has been supported by Mr. Bala Warrier and the Manipal Foundation right from the start and many connections that were made initially for the project were made with the help of the Manipal Foundation
