American Young Dreamer

We were visited by Voltaire Davis (28) on the 30th of July. Voltaire is an American entrepreneur who is working on a social media site that helps users achieve their small and large goals by their behaviour tracking system which comprises of a set of algorithms able to quantify productivity and will power levels of individuals, communities, countries. Voltaire learnt about DREAM:IN by being reading about the Fast Company article by Bruce Nussbaum that was referred to him by his mentor, Tony Thomas, Partner of Syncom Venture Management in Washington D.C.

He says that his goal is to increase his knowledge of India’s business culture. “As a young tech entrepreneur I think it’s important for my professional development to learn more about how business is done in India. We are currently shooting a documentary (Amer i Can Re-Up) that has been following us for the past year watching us build our concept to beta. Our filming goals are to capture footage of us meeting with tech experts and experiencing India’s robust tech industry. The DREAM:IN’s vision states that, ” ideas that can discover and expand the potential of individuals…. That can progress societies, nations and lives in an environmentally, economically and socially sustainable manner….To sensitize society, to catalyze solutions and demonstrate results by mobilizing talent and resources.” The software we are developing  speaks directly to your vision statement and we would like to learn and experience what Dream:in is currently doing to support the vision statement” adds Voltaire.

During the course of the day, Voltaire told us about his humble beginnings, the sacrifices that he and his business partner, Will Wes, and the hard work that they have put in to creating a prototype over the past four years. Apart from a a cultural and business learning experience, his search for a senior software programmer to help take his prototype to beta mode, brings him to India. Apart from presenting DREAM:IN and Re-Up, we also had the chance to interview Voltaire about his vision and Dreams for the future.

Q: What is your dream?

A: My dream is to build a new industry called social reality. That is one step above social media. Social reality is about websites that push people towards action. My website is called Re-Up.me. It takes people’s actions and it quantifies it and it holds them responsible to the action that they say will take in order to quantify their productivity towards their dream.

Q. How did you discover DREAM:IN and what brought you to India?

A: I discovered DREAM:IN through a mentor of mine Tony Tomas, who runs an investment firm for start-up companies and he forwarded an article on DREAM:IN in fast company magazine, and I was reading about how they are cultivating dreams and providing different aspects of mentoring and me the being the risk taker and entrepreneur, I sent a mail about my plan to come to India to see how business is done.

I didn’t necessarily know what was going to happen but  just having the courage to see what opportunities are out there pushed me to come here.

Q: Is this your first trip to India?

A: Yes this is my first trip outside of America. When you talk about risk taking some people would be like ‘how is it going to work, do you have your plan set-up, and do you have all the structure’… and to me , I was like – ‘just go, it will work itself’. Of course, you do things where you make sure where you are staying and stuff like that. A lot of time as an entrepreneur, you want to be successful you got to take risk.

Q: So far as an entrepreneur what is your gut feeling? Do you think it has been worth it?

A: Absolutely, even if relationship works with DREAM:IN or not, what is worth it is the experience. A lot of times, the things that can make you reach are the life experiences that end up adding value to your product. Because I know how to eat with my hands now, and I have learnt certain Indian customs, I want to talk business. Because there are lots of Indians in Tech, I have take time to learn their experience and that will help me in business later on in my life in my industry. So it’s definitely worth it to have cultural exchange.

Q: Why do you want to be an entrepreneur?

A: I want to be entrepreneur because I want to find myself. I believe that entrepreneurship allows you to find who you want to be. There’s nothing wrong with working for companies. That is the space where you can gain knowledge, learn experience. Being an entrepreneur, I found out more things about myself and more life lessons that I even did in school.

Q: Does this have anything to do with your community, your background, education etc?

A: Yes! It’s a mix of both. When growing up in African-American community, you don’t see too many people who are young, entrepreneurs who own their own businesses, and are successful outside the entertainment industry and athletics. I’m here to break that door by creating new role models for the youth.

Q: Do you have a dream for your generation?

A: My dream for my generation is to create a culture of being sustainable and self sufficient. I want help to create a generation that treats education as knowing how to do something, how to deal with challenges in life and being able to create life skills.

Q: who do you want to target with your products and dreams?

A: I want to target the youth regardless the nationality, race and socio-economic status.
